Nigel Shipley paints outdoors using oils on board. By painting in front of a scene, in all weathers, he is able to capture the atmosphere and a moment in time in a way that is impossible when working form photographs or sketches in a studio.
Nigel explains 'I want my paintings to have the spontaneity and energy of a sketch. His trademark is the thick paint left hanging off the edge of the board, like a torn edge. Textures, impasto oils, oozing colour and movement cover his Bristol cityscapes. He studied at Harrow and Norwich Schools of Art and won the Cube Cinema Award for his painting at the Bristol Show. His work is held in collections in the UK, France, Switzerland and elsewhere.
