Bristol’s female artists have responded to changes in the Feminist movement as the battle lines for women’s equality have shifted over the decades. From the Suffragette banners to the riot grrrl rock artists have used a range of media to articulate demands for equality in all its forms. As with the Suffragettes, more recent mass movements have inspired arts production locally.

Ladyfest began in 2000 in Olympia Washington and since then has become a world-wide movement. The first Ladyfest in Bristol was held in 2003. The event featured music, art, live performance and peer-to-peer advice. Writer, and organiser, Sian Norris describes her experience of co-organising Ladyfest in 2007 and subsequently the Women’s Literature Festival.
